Apple employees working at the Grand Central Apple Store in New York City are working to form a union, with workers taking steps that could lead to it becoming the first Apple store to join a union.
Anxiety among some Apple Store employees in the United States about stagnating wages surfaced in February, with a number of stores preparing to file paperwork to form a union. In the case of one branch in New York City, activity appears to have progressed significantly.
“Fruit Stand Workers United” organizers have begun collecting signatures at the flagship Grand Central Apple Store, the Washington Post reports. After a vote on Feb. 21 to join Workers United, organizers are now handing out signature cards to potential union members.
Workers United previously assisted another major union action involving a multinational corporation in supporting the efforts of Starbucks employees in the United States.
The store has the potential to become the first Apple Store location to unionize if enough votes are gathered to create the union, but it’s not the only one striving to do so. Anonymous workers told the report that at least three other locations are working to create their own unions.
An update from a website operated by the organizers states: “Grand Central is an extraordinary store with unique working conditions that necessitate a union to ensure that our team has the best possible standard of living in what has proven to be extraordinary times with the ongoing covid-19 pandemic and one-off consumer price inflation.”
Apple declined to comment on the report on whether it supports or plans to fight the union, but said in a statement it was “lucky to have incredible members of the retail team and we really appreciate everything they bring to Apple.” We are excited to offer very strong benefits and benefits for full-time and part-time employees, including health care, tuition reimbursement, new parental leave, paid family leave, annual stock allowances, and many other benefits.”
