According to IDC, Apple’s Mac business will continue to grow in the first quarter of 2022, with shipments continuing to increase year over year as the PC market slows.

The PC market has enjoyed two years of double-digit growth, partly rejected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the industry experienced a year-over-year decline in shipments in the first quarter of 2022, Apple was among a group of suppliers that continued to see growth over the period.

According to figures released by IDC on Sunday, Apple collected 7.2 million shipments of Macs and MacBooks in the first quarter of 2022. 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The increase also boosted Apple’s share of the PC market, from 8.1% to 8.9%, amid a shrinking market. As a whole, PC shipments were down 5.1% year-over-year from 84.8 million to 80.5 million.

Of Apple’s competitors, Lenovo still tops the list with 22.7% market share, despite a 9.2% contraction in shipments to 18.3 million. HP’s 15.8 million shipments in second place are a 17.8% year-over-year decline, but the company maintains a 19.7% market share.

Dell saw growth of 6.1%, with its 13.7 million shipments representing a 17.1% market share, ahead of Apple in third place. Fifth place is considered a tie between Asus and Acer, with 5.5 million and 5.4 million units each, respectively, although Acer dropped shipments by 5.9%, while Asus saw growth of 17.7%.

The overall decline is attributed to continued supply chain shortages, as well as a “challenging comparison to a strong 1Q21,” IDC said. In April 2021, IDC said Apple’s Mac business saw a 111.5% year-over-year increase in shipments, while the industry grew 55.2% year-over-year.

“The focus should not be on the year-over-year decline in PC volumes, which was to be expected,” said IDC Group Vice President. “The focus should be on the PC industry that manages to ship more than 80 million PCs at a time when logistics and supply chain are still a mess, accompanied by numerous geopolitical and pandemic-related challenges.”

In Apple’s January Q1 results, Mac sales were $10.85 billion, both a 25.1% year-over-year increase and the first double-digit Mac unit peak in billions.
