West Side Story’s breakthrough star Rachel Zegler will not be attending the Oscars with her colleagues, despite the film garnering a total of seven nominations, including Best Picture.

Zegler, who starred in the film as Maria, responded to a fan on Instagram who asked what she would be wearing to the event: “I’m not invited, so my boyfriend’s sweatpants and flannel.”

She further responded to outraged and disappointed fans by saying, “Idk, I’ve tried it all, but it doesn’t seem to be happening.”

“I will support West Side Story from my couch and be proud of the work we did so tirelessly 3 years ago. I hope a miracle happens at the last minute and I can personally celebrate our film, but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, guess what. Thanks for all the shock and outrage — I’m disappointed too. But that’s okay. So proud of our film.”

Although Zegler did not receive a Best Actress nomination, it is typical for the cast to be there to support the film, especially for the Best Picture nominees. However, Zegler will still support her colleagues from home.

West Side Story has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose.
