Why it matters: Tile is a find-my-device service that works similarly to Apple’s AirTags, but is cross-platform and several years older than Apple’s product. However, Tile only started adding anti-stalking features after stalking became a serious problem with AirTags.
This week, Tile announced a new feature that allows users of its app to scan for unknown Tile fobs or Tile-enabled products traveling in their vicinity. Essentially, it works as one of the safety features in Apple’s AirTags.
The new “Scan and protect” feature can be used by anyone who has downloaded Tile’s iOS or Android app and does not need a Tile account. On the first download of the app, the scan function can be seen in the top right corner of the login screen. Users who have already signed up can find it in the center of the Settings screen, which they can reach by tapping the icon in the top right corner of the main screen.
After selecting Scan & Secure, users must tap “Continue,” follow the app’s instructions, and start moving from their current location to determine if an unknown device is moving with them. The scan should run continuously for 10 minutes to get the best results. A device’s Bluetooth and location settings must also be turned on. If a user detects a suspicious fob or other device, Tile will work with law enforcement through a court order to identify the owner.
The company promises that this is only the first step in its pursuit of greater security.
